Salivary Glands Flashcards
What are the three major salivary glands
Parotid gland
Submandibular gland
Sublingual gland
Where does the parotid gland duct secrete into
Mouth by upper 2nd molar
Where does the submandibular gland duct secrete into
Lingual caruncle
Where does the sublingual gland duct secrete into
Several ducts in the floor of the mouth
What nerve innervates the parotid gland
CN IX (glossopharyngeal nerve)
What nerve(s) innervates the sublingual gland
CN VII & CN V3
What nerve(s) innervates the submandibular gland
CN VII & CN V3
What ganglion controls saliva production & what two nerve branches does it receive signals from
Submandibular ganglion
= cluster of neurons in neck,
= controls saliva production
& Receives signals from:
- Chorda tympani (branch of facial nerve CN VII)
- Lingual nerve (branch of CN V3 - mandibular division)
What control is the salivary glands under
Parasympathetic
What is the sensory role of the submandibular ganglion
Taste to anterior 2/3rds tongue
- lingual nerve (general sensation)
- chorda tympani (taste)
How does the glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX) control parotid gland secretions
CN IX synapses with the optic ganglion. At the ganglion CN IX provides parasympathetic fibres to the auriculotemporal nerve (a branch of CN V3). These fibres directly control parotid gland secretion
Is the auriculotemporal nerve a branch of glossopharyngeal nerve (CN IX)
NO - it is a branch of CN V3
But - it receives parasympathetic fibres from CN IX
& - it is these fibres that control parotid secretions
How does the facial nerve (CN VII) & trigeminal nerve (CN V3) control submandibular & sublingual gland secretions
Facial nerve forms a branch called the chorda tympani
& the trigeminal nerve forms a branch called lingual nerve
These two nerves merge & synapse at the submandibular ganglion
These post-ganglionicsecretomotorfibres directly induce the gland to produce secretions
