Palatoglossus (palatine aponeurosis)
Styloglossus (styloid process of temporal bone)
Genioglossus (mandible)
Hyoglossus (hyoid)
What nerve innervates the extrinsic muscles of the tongue
All = CN XII, except palatoglossus = CN X
Where are intrinsic muscles of the tongue mainly found
posterior aspect of the tongue
What are the four (paired) intrinsic muscles of the tongue & what are they named after
- superior longitudinal,
- inferior longitudinal,
- transverse,
- vertical muscles
They are named by the direction in which they travel
What nerve innervates the intrinsic muscles of the tongue
hypoglossal nerve (CN XII)
