Salivary Glands Flashcards
1
Q
What conditions cause sialoadenitis?
A
- rabies
- sialodacryoadenitis
2
Q
How is rabies related to sialoadenitis?
A
- rabies virus causes microscopic inflammation of the salivary glands
- saliva is a particularly important medium of spread of the rhabdovirus
- however, confirmation of rabies diagnosis is done on brain or trigeminal ganglion tissue
3
Q
what is sialodacryoadenitis?
A
- inflammation of the salivary & lacrimal glands
- in an important disease of rats, which is caused by a coronavirus
4
Q
What are miscellaneous diseases of the salivary gland?
A
- salivary ranula
- salivary mucocele
- salivary gland adenocarcinoma
5
Q
what is a salivary ranula?
A
- a saliva-filled cyst/duct on the floor of the mouth alongside the tongue
- cause is generally unknown, although some cases are due to sialolith obstruction
6
Q
what is a salivary mucocele?
A
- a pseudocyst (cavity is not lined by epithelium) filled w/ saliva
- it occurs secondarily to leakage of saliva into the surrounding soft tissue & forming a cavity surrounded by reactive connective tissue
7
Q
A
Necrotizing sialoadenitis from rat coronavirus
8
Q
A
dry eye in a rat due to rat coronavirus
9
