What is sialedenitis? Caused by? Which glands?
Acute, subacute or chronic inflammation of salivary gland.
Usually parotid or submandibular
Staph aureus, mumps virus
DDx for salivary disease?
Non-NEOPLASTIC
- sialedenitis
- sialolithiasis
- benign lymphoepithelial lesions
NEOPLASTIC
- pleiomorphic adenoma (benign)
- mucoepidermoid (malignant)
- adenoid cystic carcinoma (malignant)
What is sialolithiasis?
Obstructive calcifications in submandibular gland (90%) or parotid gland.
Stasis of saliva -> infection
Presentation of salivary disease?
Pain
Weakness
Parasthesia: facial nerve involvement (carcinoma)
Cervical lymphadenopathy
Investigation of lump?
FNA with biopsy
US for sialedenitis
CT/MRI for extent of tumour
If looking for salivary duct stone, what investigation?
Submandibular (90%) of stones: XR positioning is easy, therefore no dialog ran
Other salivary glands: sialogram
