What is sialedenitis? Caused by? Which glands?

A

Acute, subacute or chronic inflammation of salivary gland.

Usually parotid or submandibular

Staph aureus, mumps virus

A

Non-NEOPLASTIC

  • sialedenitis
  • sialolithiasis
  • benign lymphoepithelial lesions

NEOPLASTIC

  • pleiomorphic adenoma (benign)
  • mucoepidermoid (malignant)
  • adenoid cystic carcinoma (malignant)

What is sialolithiasis?

A

Obstructive calcifications in submandibular gland (90%) or parotid gland.

Stasis of saliva -> infection

A

Pain
Weakness
Parasthesia: facial nerve involvement (carcinoma)
Cervical lymphadenopathy

Investigation of lump?

A

FNA with biopsy

US for sialedenitis
CT/MRI for extent of tumour

If looking for salivary duct stone, what investigation?

A

Submandibular (90%) of stones: XR positioning is easy, therefore no dialog ran

Other salivary glands: sialogram
