Saliva + Major Salivary Glands Flashcards
Parotid gland
Produces 100% serous saliva and 25% saliva volume, largest salivary gland. Location on both sides of the mouth, below the external auditory meatus in front of both ears
Parotid/stensens papilla
Marks the duct opening of the parotid gland
Submandibular gland
60-65% of total saliva volume. Located under the jaw, in the submandibular fossa.
Submandibular gland
60-65% of total saliva volume. Located under the jaw, in the submandibular fossa.
Sublingual
5-10% of total saliva volume. Smallest. Lies on the floor of the mouth under the tongue.
Bartholin duct
A duct for the sublingual salivary gland
Ducts of rivinus
Connects the sublingual gland to the floor of the mouth. Numerous ducts.
Wharton’s duct
The duct for submandibular gland
What is a bartholin duct
A duct for the sublingual salivary gland
What is the sublingual fold
Ridge of tissue on each side of the floor of the mouth - contains ducts opening from sublingual gland
Sublingual caruncle
Openings of submandibular and sublingual gland. Small papilla at the anterior of each end of sublingual fold.
Stensons duct
The duct for the route of saliva to take place like the parotid gland
What does the epithelium do in saliva structure
Lines the ducts and produces Saliva
What is the connective tissue divided into:
. Capsule (surrounds outer portion of gland)
. Septum - lubes - lobules (divides inner portion of gland)
What are acini
The secretory units made up of secretory cells.
They are classified into:
. Mucous acini
. Serous acini
What is serous acini and what are the functions of it
. Produces watery serous saliva
. Functions - lubricant, removes epithelial debris, diluting
What is mucous acini and what are the functions of
. Produces mucous saliva
. More thick
. Functions - binds food into a bolus, lubricant, protects oral cavity against frictional abrasion
What is serous mucous acini
What do myoepothelial cells
This squeezes saliva out of lumen into the ducts
Acinar fluid is not saliva just yet
True or false
True
Acinar fluids makes it ways through the ducts collecting bits and pieces and into oral cavity as saliva
Ducts in saliva structure
Following the secretory end piece ducts travels and gets more modified it passes through:
. Intercalated duct - cuboidal epithelial
. Striated duct - single layer columnar epithelial
. Excretory duct (saliva exits into oral cavity via this duct) - pseudostratified columnar epithelial
And into the oral cavity
