Histology Of Gingiva Flashcards
What are the three areas of gingival epithelium
. Oral epithelium
. Sulcular epithelium
. Junctional epithelium
What type of epithelium is the oral epithelium
Stratified squamous epithelium
How many cellular layers does oral epithelium have and what are they
It has 4 layers:
.basal cell layer - cube shaped cells, deepest layer
.Prickle cell layer - basal and prickle attach to each other with desmosomes
. Granular cell layer - flattened cells
. Keratinised cell layer (stratum corneum) - flattened with extensive intracellular keratin
What are the functions of junctional epithelium
. Attachment
. Barrier
. Host defence
What type of epithelium is sulcular epithelium
It’s a stratified non keratinised squamous epithelium
Why is sulcular epithelium semi permeable
It allows fluid to flow from the gingiva connective tissue to the sulcus, known as gingival crevicular fluid GCF
How many cellular layers does sulcular epithelium have
2 layers:
- basal and prickle cell layer
How does the junctional epithelium get attached to the tooth surface
By Hemidesmosomes
What is another word for gingival connective tissue
Lamina propria
What are the functions of gingival connective tissue
. Strength
. Transportation of water, nutrients and oxygen
. Host response - immune response
What type of epithelium is junctional epithelium
Stratified squamous non keratinised epithelium
What are the layers of junctional epithelium
It has two layers:
. External basal lamina - connects basal layer to connective tissue
. Internal basal lamina - attached to the tooth via hemidesmosomes
