Q

What structures in the mouth are covered by lining mucosa

A

. Buccal mucosa
. Labial mucosa
. Alveolar mucosa
. Floor of the mouth
. Soft palate
. Ventral surface of the tongue

It is non keratinised, It is a type of epithelium (a layer of cells that forms a protective barrier)

Q

What is hyperkeratimised

A

It’s when non keratinised epithelium and transform into keratinised in response to frictional or chemical trauma, It is reversible if the cause of the trauma is removed but it can take time for the keratin to be shed.

Q

What are covered by masticatory mucosa

A

Hard palate, dorsum of tongue, attached gingiva

2 types of keratinised epithelium:
Orthokeratinised- least common epithelium in the oral cavity (hard palate, attached gingivae)
Parakeratinised- (attached gingivae, dorsum of the tongue)

Q

What is affected is oral pigmentation

A

Melanin - Melanin is formed by melanocytes (originating from neural crest cells) which sit in the basal layer between the dividing epithelial cells.
