indications/moa for aspirin
A
- pain: blocks pain impulses centrally and peripherally
- antipyretic: resets body temp through hypothalamus (only in adults)
- antiplatelet: decreases clot formation (stroke, tia, angina)
- anti inflammatory: inhibits prostaglandins

adverse effects for aspirin
A
- GI: dyspepsia, heartburn, upper gastric discomfort, bleeding/bruising, ulcer
- petechia, bruising, bleeding
- toxication effect

aspirin contraindication/cautions
A
- child/teens: reye’s syndrome (encephalopathy, damaged liver)
- renal impairment: nephrotoxic in high doses

A
- admin with food and water to help GI
- assess and reassess for therapeutic or ae

pt education aspirin
A
- if taking for a long time, educate on possible GI problem
- monitor for bleeding, tinnitus, hearing loss
- stop 2 weeks before surgery
- limit etoh
- caution if on a low na diet
- inform if had a previous allergic reaction

- hyperpnea
- resp. alkalosis
- tachypnea/hyperventilation
- metabolic acidosis
- confusion
- pulmonary edema

chronic toxicity s/s for aspirin
A
- dizziness
- tinnitus or hearing loss
- mental confusion

treatment for toxicity
A
- gastric lavage and activated charcoal: pumps stomach, decreases absorption of meds
- IV Na bicarbonate: makes urine more alkaline to excrete it out of the body quicker
- hemodialysis: remove drug from bloodstream
