A
binds with benzo receptors in nerve cells of brain to decrease anxiety

indications of benzos
A
- anxiety relief
- balanced anesthesia

ae of benzos
A
- elderly: resp. depression, over sedation, dizziness, confusion, hypotension, impaired mobility– FALL RISK
- hepatic/renal impairment: excessive sedation

caution/contraindication benzos
A
- risk for abuse (schedule IV)
- accumulate in elderly and those with impaired liver function
- risk for toxicity: excessive sedation, respiratory depression, coma

benzo implications
A
- needs second nurse verification
- count before removing drug
- dosage individualized; start with low dose
- if taking with opioid analgesic, lower opioid does and gradually increase to prevent cns depression
- given for short amount of time to prevent dependence, taper of gradually
- monitor for sx of withdrawal
