What does the earth wire do?
It usually does nothing. The only time it is used is when something goes wrong inside the machine.
How does the earth wire prevent you from being shocked?
If the live wire is exposed and touches the metal casing you could get shocked, however, the earth wire is connected to the metal casing so that the current goes through the earth wire and into the ground instead of shocking you. It has a very low resistance and so a strong current will easily go through it.
What do the live and neat real wires do?
They provide potential difference needed for the motor inside the washing machine to turn.
What is it called when the earth wire completes the circuit and connects the live wire to the ground?
A short circuit
