AFT
Rear most section of aircraft.
AFT Galley
Economy Plus and Economy Galley
Below the Wing
All operations and activities that occur on the ground like fueling the aircraft, loading and unloading baggage, wing walking, etc.
Bulkhead
A term used to define any dividing wall in the aircraft.
Cabin
The interior of the aircraft where the customers are seated.
Charter Flights
Flights that are operating with a sports team or group that have exclusive use of the aircraft and are isolated from the general public.
Choice Menu
Snacks and meals available for sale in economy plus an economy service.
Core4 Service Standards
Core4 service standards are standards that shape how we interact with our customers and each other. Safe, caring, dependable and efficient. Core 4 serves as our framework for the way we make decisions.
Customers
The passengers traveling are always referred to as customers. FAs always need to be aware of our customers and their needs.
Deplane
Term used to indicate customers leaving or exiting the aircraft.
Doghouse
A small compartment on the aircraft cabin used to stow equipment.
Domicile/ Base
Geographic area designated by United where FAs are based.
Economy Plus
Economy Plus seats are located in the economy cabin. These seats have extra legroom.
Eco-skies
As part of United corporate commitment to protecting the environment, we recycle aluminum cans, plastic bottles, newspapers, magazines, and menus on all flights worldwide.
Express Dining
Customer may not want to eat during the main meal service and request to a later time.
Ferry Flights
The transfer of an aircraft from one point to another, without customers.
Final Descent
Final cabin preparation prior to landing.
Fuselage
The body of the aircraft to which the wings and tail are attached to.
Galley
The kitchen area on board the aircraft were meals and beverages is prepared.
Galley Packing Diagram
Galley packing diagram provides a map of where everything is located in the galley.
Gate
Area where customers check in and wait before boarding the aircraft.
Hemispheres Magazine
It is a monthly in-flight magazine. Hemisphere is found on United and United Express flights in the seat back pockets.
Hub
A large airport where an airline connects customers. United operates hubs in
-Cleveland, Ohio (CLE)
- Denver, Colorado (DEN)
-Newark, New Jersey (EWR)
-Guam (GUM)
-Washington, D.C (IAD)
-Houston, Texas (IAH)
-Los Angeles, California (LAX)

Inboard
The area in the cabin nearest the center of the aircraft.
Inflight Customer Kit (IK)
A blue canvas bag containing items related to customer needs, band aids, coat tags, reports, etc.
Inflight Services
The department of FAs at United Airlines
Initial Descent
Is the begin of phase 4 of a flight. It starts the beginning id preparing the cabin for landing.
International Purser/ Purser
Is leadership-based program for international flights. The Domestic Purser is the lead position on domestic flights.
Jet Bridge
A walkway connecting the aircraft to the gate area, also known as the loading bridge.
Lavatory
Restrooms located in the aircraft.
Main Canin
The economy section of the customer cabin.
Main Meal Service
The first meal service after takeoff.
Manuals App
The library where all digitally-formatted Inflight Services Manuals are housed.
Mid-Flight Service
Mid-Flight services are offered in our long-haul flights. It’s a light meal service halfway through the flight.
MileagePlus
Customer loyalty program designated to earn miles and awards.
Narrow-body
Aircraft’s with one aisle, includes:
-Airbus A319/A320
-Boeing 737
-Boeing 757
Onboard
Anyone or anything located in the aircraft.
On-time
United aims for excellence in attendance, our business thrives on our on-time performance everyday
Outboard
The area in the cabin closest to the exterior of the aircraft.
Overhead Bins
Storage compartments located above the customers seats.
Phases of Flight
Specific stages of flight with designated safety and service duties. Placard Sticker or posting in the aircraft cabin with information.
Pre-arrival Service
The last service prior to landing.
Pre-boarding
Pre-Board is available for military service members in uniforms, customer with disabilities and families with children 2 years and younger.
Pre-Departure Service
This service is accomplished during boarding for our first-class customers.
Pre-meal Beverage
A beverage service accomplished after take-off and prior to the meal service.
Premium Transcontinental
Premium transcontinental flights span the continental U.S. Currently, they are
-New York/ Newark to/from LAX,
-New York/ Newark to/from SFO,
-Boston to/from SFO
Purser
A FA working as the leader of the flight crew.
Quick Turn
When an aircraft is delayed inbound to a station and all station personnel and crew work together within a condensed time frame to get the flight back on schedule.
Restock
Additional galley supplies used to replenish the main beverage cart.
Service Standards
Criteria set for service presentation to customers.
Standby (Shift)
A reserve FA scheduled for a standby shift at the airport. Reserves maybe assigned a trip during the 4 hour shift.
Star Alliance
A multi-member airline network that connects customers throughout the world; United is founding member of the Star Alliance Network.
Tail/ Ship Number
Each aircraft in the United Airline fleet is issued a number and this number is painted near the rear of the aircraft and is referred to as the tail number or ship number. You can also find this number on a placard on the flight deck door and in the aft galley area.
Three Row Rule
A FA should never be more than three rows away from a beverage/ meal cart when in the aisle.
Trans-Atlantic
Any flight which crossed the Atlantic Ocean.
Example: Newark to Frankfurt Tran’s-Pacific Any flight which crossed the Pacific Ocean.
Example 2: San Francisco to Guam.
United Clean Plus
This is a continued effort to deliver an industry-leading standard of cleanliness.
United App
The United app that provides customers with boarding passes and travel options, push notifications about their flights, personalized greetings and so much more.
Wide-Body
Aircraft that had two aisles. In the United fleet they are Boeing 767, 777, and 787.
