What is DBS and what does it do?
Disclosure and Barring Service
Any individual who is working with vulnerable individuals can be screened for unspent convictions and cautions.
More advanced DBS checks can include details of spent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and final warnings.
A DBS will also check the barred list to see if the individual is barred from working with children or vulnerable adults
Safeguarding key points
- safeguarding means the measures taken to protect people’s health, wellbeing and rights
- safeguarding enables people to be safe from harm, abuse and neglect
- safeguarding is the duty of everyone
What might safeguarding children involve?
- protecting from maltreatment
- preventing impairment of their health and development
- ensuring children grow up in a stable home with provision of safe and effective care
- take action to enable children to have the best outcomes
What are common safeguarding issues in adult care environments?
- maladministration of medication (late, incorrect, inappropriate)
- pressure sores
- falls
- rough treatment
- poor nutritional care (swallowing problems, religious or dietary needs)
- lack of social inclusion
- institutionalised care
- physical abuse
- financial abuse
What legislations link to safeguarding?
- The Care Act 2014
- The Children Act 2004

Safeguarding - policies and procedures?
- staff have a duty of care to report all safeguarding concerns
- all care environments must have safeguarding procedures in place
- all care environments must have a named person who is responsible for safeguarding
- all staff must have safeguarding training
- all staff must be aware of the potential indicators of abuse
- a safeguarding reporting system must be in place
- all staff and service users must be aware of the procedures to follow to report safeguarding issues
- all staff must be DBS checked
Who are DBS checks required for?
anyone aged over 16 for roles that involve working or volunteering with children or vulnerable adults
anyone applying to foster or adopt a child
