Define a hazard
Anything that can cause harm, injury, or an accident.
Define a risk
The chance or likelihood that someone will be harmed by a hazard
Define a control measure
An action that can be taken which will ensure the potential harm caused by a hazard is reduced
What is an environmental hazard?
objects/situations in the area for example slip and trip hazards
What is a biological hazard?
human products, for example waste, infection, soiled material and vomit
What is a chemical hazard?
potentially toxic substances, for example medicines and cleaning materials
What is a psychological hazard?
has an impact on the mind, for example stress, fatigue, working hours, coping with challenging behaviour
What is a physical hazard?
natural phenomena, for example noise and radiation
What is a musculoskeletal hazard?
affecting the body’s movement, for example manual handling, display screen equipment
What is a working conditions hazard?
the working environment, for example temperature, noise, travel, lighting
What is a working practices hazard?
the rules, policies and procedures of a workplace, for example working hours, supervision, training
What is a lack of security hazard?
physical security of a building, for example door locks, alarm systems, monitoring visitors, DBS
What can control measures include?
- changes to working practices
- carrying out specific tasks or duties
- making physical changes to the environment
- adding in new security procedures
- setting boundaries for particular activities or actions
- staff training and development
