Define child abuse
maltreatment of a child by a parent or caregiver
intent is not important when deciding if abuse has occurred - just that the child has suffered harm
action or inaction that causes injury, death, emotional harm or risk of harm to a child
harm = detrimental impact on the child caused by the abuse
Types of child abuse
physical
emotional
sexual
neglect
Signs of physical abuse
injuries without adequate explanations/different explanations between parent and child
injuries on soft parts of body
reluctance to show skin
change in child’s demeanour
expressing fear or being watchful towards adults
flinching when approached
Define neglect
failure of parent/guardian to ensure that the child’s needs are being met
Signs of neglect
untreated medical/dental issues
low self-esteem or self-worth
failure of adults to respond to the child
injuries which indicate a child has not been appropriately supervised eg. burns/falls
poor state of clothing
poor hygiene
infestations eg. scabies, lice
unsuitable home environment
poor language, communication or social skills
Signs of emotional abuse
low self-esteem or self-worth
harmful interactions with parent or guardian
hiding or stealing food
changes in behaviour or emotional state eg. self-harm
running away
developmental delay
Signs of sexual abuse
child possessing awareness of sexual issues inappropriate for age
eating disorders
sleep disturbances
acting in what is perceived to be a sexualised manner
repeated UTIs
significant behaviour change
self-harm
suicidal ideation
