Q

How would explain the process of symbolic exchange (Gift-Reception-Return Gift) to someone who never took this class?

A

Gratitude/way we live becomes the return gift to god(scripture - past, sacraments - present, ethics - future)

17
Q

Chauvet posits that a symbolic order for the Church revolves around three key areas: Scriptures, sacraments, and ethics. Why those three? Why not three other areas? Why are these so key for him?

A

Scripture instructs the sacraments which in turn instructs our ethics

18
Q

What connections do you see between the work of Schillebeeckx in Christ the Sacrament of the Encounter with God and the work of Chauvet in The Sacraments: The Word of God at the Mercy of the Body?

A

Connection: Depends on the body of the church. Sacrament: outward sign of an inward/invisible grace. Christ and the church are a sacrament. Church is a vehicle for the encounter with god
Schillebeeckx: Church as a sacrament being the outward sign of Christs’ inward grace. Epiclesis and Bestowal (twofold action). Ex opere operato highlights the necessary action of the minister in causing grace in the sacraments.
Chauvet: Christ is the primordial sacrament; church is sacrament.

19
Q

Why do you think Schillebeeckx makes such a big deal about asserting that the Church (as an institution, as the Mystical Body of Christ, and as a “people”) is the metaphorical “place” where the encounter with God happens?

A

In the church, through the church, at the church, without the church there is no place for the encounter to happen. Similar to Chauvet, church is the primordial sacrament.
