SAC 2 - environmental factors Flashcards
Environmental Factors
The Physical surroundings in which we live, work and Play. Environmental factors include workplaces, housing,
Roads and geographical access to resources such as
Healthcare.
HOUSING
ventilation and hygiene
design and safety
overcrowding
sleeping conditions
security
pollutants
resources for eating a nutritional diet
access to clean water and sanitation
Ventilation and hygiene - element of housing
inadequate housing links to increases in mortality and morbidity from infectious and chronic diseases. Eg. Poor ventilation promotes the growth of mould which triggers asthma
Design and safety - element of housing
Poorly maintained stairs, floor surfaces, bodies of water (ponds, pools) balconies, electrical wiring and furniture increase the risk of injury, drowning and electrocution. Particularly focus for elderly and young.
Overcrowding - element of housing
Link between overcrowded housing and mental health issues. Added strain of bathrooms and kitchens which can lead to unsanitary conditions.
Sleeping conditions - element of housing
Noise and overcrowding can contribute to sleep conditions and contribute to mental health conditions.
Security - element of housing
lack of security can promote fear, leading to anxiety and stress.
Pollutants - element of house
Environmental tobacco smoke, asbestos, pet hair can lead to respiratory conditions.
Resources for eating a nutritious diet - element of housing
refridgeration, cooking appliances promote healthy eating and not relying on takeaway foods which are often high in fat.
Access to clean water and sanitation - element of housing
Decreases risk of infectious diseases. Sanitation removes human wastes from immediate environment, decreases risk of diseases such as Cholera – spread by contact from human waste.
WORK ENVIRONMENT -
Many Australians spend a significant amount of their time here.
UV Exposure - work environment
Those working outdoors are more exposed increasing the risk of skin cancers.
accidents and injuries - work environment
Many workplaces have risks associated with them. Farms, fishing trawlers and mining use heavy machinery increasing risk of injury.
Exposure to hazardous substances - work environment
Paint, asbestos, fuels, gases, acids are used in many workplaces.
