SAC 2 - Biological Factors Flashcards
Biological factors
Factors relating to the body that impact health and well-being, such as genetics, body weight, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and birth weight.
Body weight
Biological influence on body weight is inheritance of a body type. Body type is a combination of body shape and size.
AGE
Rate of decline can depend on the person, you can reduce the risk by staying mentally and socially active, eating well and exercising.
BLOOD PRESSURE
Blood pressure is the force exerted on the blood vessel walls. High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. A person with hypertension - blood does not flow through the blood vessels as easily as someone with normal blood pressure.
BLOOD CHOLESTEROL
too much LDL cholesterol leads to the narrowing of blood vessels, decreasing blood transportation around the body. Increasing the likelihood of CVD.
GLUCOSE REGULATION
Glucose is preferred fuel for
energy within cells.
Usually obtained from breaking
down carbohydrates.
BIRTH WEIGHT
Low birth weight (under 2.5kg) more likely to have underdeveloped immune system, more susceptible to infections, premature death and disabilities such as speech and learning difficulties. Increases levels of CVD in adults
GENETICS
sex
hormones
sex -
Certain conditions are only found or more common in either
males or females, due to biological differences caused by genetics.
OESTROGEN
Key hormone in regulation of menstrual cycle.
Also helps to maintain bone density in women keeping bones strong.
TESTOSTERONE
Male sex hormone (is found in small quantities in females)
Responsible for male sex characteristics and production of sperm.
