sac Flashcards
Hypothermia
Hypothermia is when your body loses heat faster than it can produce heat, causing a dangerously low body temperature. Normal body temperature is around 37° celsius. Hypothermia occurs as your body temperature falls below 35° celsius .
Biodiversity
Biodiversity is all the different kinds of life you’ll find in one area, the variety of flora and fauna that make up our natural world.
Climate
El Nino - warm, drought phases (little to no rain)
La Nina - flood, extensive rain
Northerly Aspect
Taller Trees – eucalyptus/gum
Warmer climate
Drier soils
Lack of vegetation
Southerly Aspect
Climate would be wetter
Colder climate
Increase in ferns
Possible increase in fertile soils
Heat loss – 4 different types
Conduction
Convection
Evaporation
Radiation
Conduction
Heat passes out of the body directly into a
cooler object, such as the ground an injured
person is lying on.
Convection
Heat rises away from the body into the air due to cold air being blown at you.
Evaporation
Heat is removed from the body as water or perspiration evaporates and the skin dries.
Radiation
Heat is given off to a cooler environment directly.
First Aid for Hypothermia (6)
1) Move the person out of the cold
2) Remove wet clothing
3) Try to warm the person (apply war, compress to neck, chest and groin)
4) Wrap the person in a hypothermia wrap
5) Stay with the person
6) Continually monitor breathing, if breathing stops start CPR
How to reduce the risk of Hypothermia
Layer correctly
Hydrate and eat correctly
Minimise prolonged exposure to cold conditions
Stay dry
Fabrics used in the base layer
