S6. Tests for Statistical Hypotheses Flashcards
Define hypothesis
A statement that some population parameter is equal to a particular value or lies in some set of values.
What are the Null and alternative hypotheses?
Null hypothesis (H0) is the hypothesis of interest.
Alternative hypothesis (H1) is its negation.
E.g. Average grade was 66. H0: μ = 66, H1: μ ≠ 66
What are the two types of errors of hypothesis testing?
- Type 1 errors*: rejecting the Null hypothesis when in fact it is true.
- Type 2 errors*: failing to reject the Null hypothesis when in fact is is false.
5 steps of running a hypothesis test

What is the population parameter and estimator for the standard error of sampling distribution?
Tests regarding a single proportion
