S2 Forces Flashcards
What are the 3 types of force?
Push, pull and twist
What are the 3 things a force can change about an object?
Speed, shape and direction
What instrument do we use to measure force?
Newton balance
What 2 things can happen if the forces acting on an object are balanced?
Remain at rest or continue moving at a constant speed.
What would happen to your weight if you went to Mars, and why?
Your weight would decrease, as Mars has a smaller gravitational pull.
What happens to an object if the forces acting on it are unbalanced?
It will move and speed up.
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is a measure how much matter makes up an object, weight is the Force due to gravity acting on it.
What are the units for mass?
Kilograms (kg)
What are the units for weight?
Newtons (N)
What are the units for force?
Newtons (N)
Friction is a force which ________ motion.
Opposes
What can we do to increase friction?
Increase surface area, force objects together more, use a rougher surface.
What is the equation that we use to calculate the weight of an object?
W = mg
or
Weight = mass x gravity
What can we do to decrease friction?
Decrease surface area, separate objects with an air gap or lubricant, use a smoother surface
What is the value of g on Earth?
10 N/kg
