S2 Chemical Reactions Flashcards
What is the difference between a physical change and a chemical reaction?
Physical change – no new substance is formed and it is reversible.
Chemical reaction – a new chemical is formed and it is very difficult to reverse.
What are the 5 physical changes?
Freezing, melting, evaporating, condensing and dissolving.
What is made in a chemical reaction?
A new substance (chemical) and energy.
What are the 4 signs of a chemical reaction?
A gas being given off, a change in colour, a solid forming, and a change in temperature
What are the 4 things which affect the rate of a reaction?
Particle size, temperature, concentration and the use of a catalyst
How would you test a gas to see if it was hydrogen?
Hydrogen burns with a squeaky pop
How would you test a gas to see if it was oxygen?
Oxygen relights a glowing splint
How would you test a gas to see if it was carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide turns limewater cloudy
What is meant by the ‘rate’ of a chemical reaction?
The speed at which a chemical reaction occurs
How could I increase the rate of a chemical reaction?
Decrease particle size, use a catalyst, increase the temperature, increases concentration
How could I decrease the rate of a chemical reaction?
Use larger particle size, decrease the temperature, decrease concentration
What speeds up a chemical reaction without being used up?
A catalyst
Physical change or chemical reaction?
Frying an egg
