Difference between primary, secondary and tertiary prevention?

A
  1. Primary prevention: prevent disease or injury before it ever occurs
  2. Secondary Prevention: reduce the impact of disease or injury once it has already occurred
  3. Tertiary prevention: aims to soften the impact of an ongoing illness or injury that has lasting effects

Examples of primary, secondary and tertiary prevention

A

Primary prevention:

  • Legislation and enforcement to ban or control things or to mandate safe and healthy practices e.g. use of bike helmets
  • Education about healthy and safe habits e.g. eating and drinking alcohol
  • Immunisation against infectious disease

Secondary Prevention:

  • Regular exams and screening tests
  • Involves implementing programs to return people to original health and function to prevent long term problems
  • Daily low dose aspirins or exercise programs

Tertiary prevention:

  • Helping people mange long term complex health problems and injuries e.g. chronic diseases
  • Improve quality of life and life expectancy
  • Cardiac or stroke rehab programs
  • Support groups
