Rxn - Non metals + o2 Flashcards
How does the rxn take place?
Non metal + oxygen -> acidic oxides or neutral oxides
Acidic oxides of non metals dissolve in water to give?
acids
1) carbon
C + O2 -> CO2 (Acidic oxide)\
CO2 + H20 -> H2CO3 (Carbonic acid)
2) Sulphur (Yellow solid)
S + O2 -> SO2 (Acidic oxide)
SO2 + H20 -> H2SO3
Non metal acidic oxides are called
Anhydrides
Phosphorus
P + O2 -> P2O5 (phosphorus pentoxide)
carbon monoxide (neutral oxide)
Carbon when given an insufficient supply of oxygen (of air) then it forms a neutral oxide -> Carbon monoxide
2C + O2 -> 2CO neutral oxide
Hydrogen (neutral oxide)
2H2 + O2 -> 2H2O (water)
these non metal oxides are called covalent compounds bcs
these non metal oxides are called covalent compounds bcs they are formed by the sharing of electrons. They do not contain oxide ions.
