Rxn - metals + Hydrogen Flashcards
do metals react wid hydrogen?
generally not bcs metals lose or donate electrons to the ones that gain it nd thts how the compound is formed but HYDROGEN ALSO FORMS COMPOUNDS BY LOSING OR DONATING ELECTRONS so usually the hydrogen atom will not accept elecs given by other atoms to form a compound BUT A FEW V REACTIBE METALS (Sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium) cn FORCE hydrogen atoms to accepts the elecs given by them and hence they form - SALT - LIKE COMPOUNDS CALLED METAL HYDRIDES
Define metal hydrides
they are ionic compounds formed by transfer of elecs from metal atoms to hydrogen atoms. In a metal hydride the hydrogen is present in the form of a negative ion (anion) H-
Hydrogen gas over heated sodium?
2Na + H2 -> 2NaH (Na+ and H-)
H2 is passed over heated calcium
Ca + H2 -> CaH2 (CA2+) and (2H-)
pottasium and magnesium hydride
KH, MgH2
