Metals nd non - Rxn of dilute acid + metal Flashcards
Wht is formed aftr metal reacts wid acid
metal salt + hydrogen gas (H2)
Metals displace ………. in acids
Hydrogen
Do all metals displace hydrogen in acids?
Most do, only the ones above hydrogen in the reactivity series
Which metals dont displace hydrogen in acids?
Cu, Ag, Au ——–> no rxn
metal + acid —->
metal + acid —-> metal salt + H2
Metal + HCL ———>
metal chloride + h2
Rxn of HCL wid Sodium
2Na + 2Hcl ——-> 2NaCl + H2
Rxn of HCL wid Sodium is what in nature
Violent rxn
Sodium is?
most reactive
Sodium chloride has which no. in formula?
No number, NaCl only have to balance the eqn tho
Rxn of HCL wid Magnesium
Mg + 2HCL ——-> MgCl2 + h2
Rxn of HCL wid Magnesium is what in nature?
Reacts quite violently
Mg is?
less reactive than Na
Magnesium chloride has which no. in the formula?
2 -> MgCl2
Specialty of rxn of acid + Al
At first the rxn is slow bcs of the thin but tough protected layer of al oxide but later when the acid dissolves this layer fresh Al reacts rapidly wid acid
Rxn of HCL wid Al
2Al + 6HCL —–> 2 AlCl3 + 3 H2
Rxn of HCL wid Al is?
rapid after layer is dissolved
Which no. is in Aluminum chloride’s formula
3 -> AlCl3
Al is? (reactivity series point of view)
less reactive than mg
Rxn of HCL wid Zn ———>
Zn + 2Hcl ——> ZnCl2 + H2
Zn is? (reactivity series point of view)
Less reactive than Al
Zinc chloride’s formula has which no.?
2 -> ZnCl2
Rxn of HCL wid Fe
Fe + HCL ——> FeCl2 + H2
FeCl2 is called?
Iron (II) Chloride
Which no. is in Iron (II) Chloride’s no.?
2 -> FeCl2
Rxn of cu wid Hcl
Cu + Hcl ——–> No rxn
Which all metals dont react with acids (Hcl)
Cu, Ag, Au
What sort of metals displace hydrogen frm dilute acids?
Only the metals more reactive than Hydrogen (metals above Hydrogen in the reactivity series) which are —–> The metals that give electrons more easily than Hydrogen are the ones that can actually displace Hydrogen
How do metals displace hydrogen frm dilute acids?
The ones more reactive than Hydrogen give electrons out easily, these electrons reduce the H+ ion present in the acid turning to Hydrogen gas!
Why Cu, Ag dont react wid Hydrogen nd displace it?
Bcs they dont give out electrons required for the reduction of hydrogen hence no ionization of H+ ions tkes place meaning no H2 gas will be produced
metals …….. hydrogen in the reactivity series displace and metals ………. hydrogen in the reactivity series don’t displace
above —> displace
below —–> dont displace
Metals with Sulfuric acid —>?
Metal + sulfuric acid —–> metal sulphate + h2 gas
Sodium sulphate formula?
Na2SO4, no new no.s! na ka 2 lagega
Magnesium sulfate formula?
MgSO4 -> no new no.s!
Al sulfate formula?
Al2 (SO4)3 -> Al ka 2 and so4 pe () me 3
Zn sulfate formula?
ZnSO4 -> no new!
Fe sulfate formula?
FeSO4 -> no new!
What is the specialty of rxn b/w metals and nitric acid?
No h2 gas is evolved
Why no H2 gas is evolved in the rxn b/w metals and nitric acid?
Bcs Nitric acid = strong acid, so it oxidizes the hydrogen forming WATER!
What else happens when nitric acid oxidizes hydrogen?
When it does so, nitric acid itself is reduced to any of the nitrogen oxides depending upon nature of metal, temp of rxn and concentration of our nitric acid!
Exception in the specialty of nitric acid’s rxn wid metal?
HOWEVER! very dilute nitric acid + mg/mn —–> HYDROGEN GAS!!
Why will h2 be produced if HNO3 reacts wid Mg/Mn
Bcs dilute HNO3 is a very weak oxidizing agent! hence it aint able to oxidize hydrogen to water
Rxn b/w HNO3 nd Mg
Mg + HNO3 —–> Mg(NO3)2 + h2
Magnesium nitrate ke formula me kya no. h?
No3 has () wala 2
Rxn b/w HNO3 nd Mn
Mn + HNO3—> Mn(NO3)2 + h2
Manganese nitrate ke formula me kya no. h?
No3 has () wala 2
