Czar Nicolas II
Define: king of Russia from 1894-1917, believed he was an absolute monarch who got power from God
Importance:
Vladimir Lenin
Define: Takes the ideas of Engels and Marx to the Russian people, became leader of the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution
Importance: He wanted everyone to have an education, equality between men and women, to spread the idea of socialism to the working class, and to teach everyone to read
Proletariat
Define: The name given to the working class in Russia, mostly factory workers
Importance: they had very bad working and living conditions, and could start a revolution
Communists
Define: Government/public owns all the land. There is no private property and there is a social equality. Everyone’s basic needs are met and there are social classes
Importance: There was no more private property, proletarians had to work on publicly owned land and in factories and workshops, one national bank for everyone’s money, education for all children

Joseph Stalin
Define: A man who had millions of people killed who went against his communist rule
Importance: Even if people didn’t like him, they couldn’t go against him because he would have them killed
Kulaks
Define: A group of people who were unhappy with the communist rule
Importance: Stalin had them all killed for going against him
Five-Year Plans
Define: Stalin’s plan to increase heavy industries such as coal, oil, steel, and electricity using extremely high production targets for each factory
Importance: He set unrealistic goals for things he wanted to get done which could lead to problems in the economy and people could be killed and overworked
Great Purge
Define: A campaign to kill and imprison members of the Communist party who were considered a threat to Stalin, and were unhappy with Communist rule
Importance: As a result of this, millions of people were killed if they were suspected to turn on him. In addition, he killed anyone who
he thought might be anti- communist
Bolsheviks
Define: A member of the Social-Democratic Workers Party, which was a communist led by Lenin
Importance: They were the workers and were somewhat wealthy, so the could revolt
Collectivization
Define: Policy that forced the peasants to give up their individual farms and join large collective farms
Importance: This would enrage the farm owners who loose land and would eventually lead to famine. In addition 3 million kulaks were killed because they wouldn’t give up their land
