Collectivization

A

Define: policy that forced the peasants to give up their individual farms and join large collective farms owned by the government
Importance: This would enrage the farm owners who loose land and would eventually lead to famine. In addition 3 million in the kulaks group (people who were unhappy with the communist rule) were killed because they wouldn’t give up their land

Great Purge

A

Define: A campaign to kill and imprison members of the Communist party who were considered a threat to Stalin, and were unhappy with Communist rule
Importance: As a result of this, millions of people were killed if they were suspected to turn on him. In addition, he killed anyone who
he thought might be anti- communist

Toussaint L’Ouverture

A

Define: Leader of the Haitian slave revolt where slaves were against being owned so they rebelled violently
Importance: This revolution helped make Haiti its own independent country because people didn’t want to be a part of France anymore. After the slaves revolted, the French sent troops into Haiti and the Haitian people fought them away and then Haiti became its own country

Little Red Book

A

Define: A book that contained Mao’s laws and beliefs in China
Importance: People had to carry it around at all times. If they didn’t have it with them, they were seen as a threat. Children were forced to learn about Mao’s laws in school and if people didn’t agree with his ideas they were hurt violently by Mao supporters

Five-Year Plans

A

Define: Stalin’s plan to increase heavy industries such as coal, oil, steel, and electricity using extremely high production targets for each factory
Importance: He set unrealistic goals for things he wanted to get done which could lead to problems in the economy. People were very overworked and this led to famine because there weren’t enough farmers growing food
