Louis XIV
Define: Ruler of France
Importance: He fought many wars to increase the size of France and spent 10% of the country’s income on Versailles, the palace where he lived
Czar Nicholas II
Define: King of Russia from 1894-1917
Importance: Believed he was an absolute monarch who got his power from God
Toussaint L’Ouverture
Define: Leader of the Haitian Revolution where slaves were against being owned so they rebelled violently
Importance: This revolution helped make Haiti its own independent country because people didn’t want to be a part of France anymore. After the slaves revolted, the French sent troops into Haiti and the Haitian people fought them away and then Haiti became its own country and slavery was ended in France and Haiti
Vladimir Lenin
Define: Took the ideas of Engels and Marx to the Russian people, became leader of the Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution
Importance: Wanted everyone to have an education, equality between men and women, wanted to spread the idea of socialism to the working class, wanted to teach everyone to read
Mao Zedong
Define: Believed in communism
Importance: Wanted people to learn his ideas so he made people learn them in school and carry around the Little Red Books
Joseph Stalin
Define: A man who killed millions of people who went against his communist rule and were against communism
Importance: If people were seen as a threat to Stalin, he killed them
