Social Darwinism
Define: strong people their have wealth and power increase where poor people have their wealth and power decrease
Importance: the poor people don’t have a fair chance at succeeding because their wealth and power decreases compared to the rich and strong people who’s wealth and power increases
Missionaries
Define: people who go to foreign countries to do religious works like convincing people to join their religion, and helping sick and poor people
Importance: they helped people who were in need, some people we’re annoyed that they tried to make them change their religion
Berlin Conference
Define: a meeting in 1884 between the major European countries where they claimed the land they wanted in Africa
Importance: Africans didn’t have a say in who controlled/took over their territory, borders were being made, Africans didn’t agree with this idea
King Leopold II
Define: treated people like slaves, paid them very little money for all the work they did, used resources from the Congo to make himself richer, self centered
Importance: people were treated very harshly and unfairly because of him, and mutilation, overworking and death occurred under his rule
Belgian Congo
Define: there were harsh conditions, people were treated unfairly, and mutilation, overworking and death occurred
Importance: Leopold was the king so he treated people very badly, and mutilation, overworking and death occurred under his rule
Menelik II
Define: became emperor of Ethiopia, started a war with Italy
Importance: he helped Ethiopia beat Italy in the war, they became a stronger nation
Zulus
Define: a group of Africans that fought against the Europeans for land and resources
Importance: they defeated the British at first, but then lost after they brought in many more troops, they had less people and weren’t developed
