President of Russia. Studied law at Leningrad State University. He served 15 years as a foreign intelligence officer for the KGB. Became prime minister in 1999. Became president after Yeltsin resigned.
Sanction
It is a strong action taken in order to make people obey a law or obey a rule. It can also mean giving approval.
Volodymyr Zelensky
He was elected president of Ukraine in 2019. He was active in theater. He co-founded Studio Kvartal.
Soviet Union
Officially known as Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Existed from 1922-1991. Former country.
Cold War
“From Stettin in the Baltic to Trieste in the Adriatic, an iron curtain has descended across the Continent [of Europe].” Are the words that described the beginning of the Cold War. It was between the Soviet Union and the United States. The rapid changes in the Soviet Union and eastern Europe ended the Cold War.
NATO
It is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. There are 30 members as of today.
