Running Aground Flashcards
Notice
o You should have the situational awareness to know where you are. Be aware of your position. Make sure the ECDIS matches the radar, but the radar is more accurate.
o Watch your Fathometer (this is a great thing to do during turns).
Response
o Have the Mate call the bosun and the lookout on the bow and ask them to prepare the offshore anchor.
o Utilize your bow thruster.
o Use your rudder and your helm to the best of your ability to avoid it.
o Talk out loud that you believe you may run aground.
o Call the engineers and ask them to close the watertight doors.
o Have Mate plot a position.
o Call lookout and inform them of the situation, ask for extra-sharp lookout.
o Consider where you are and the bottom of the area (ask the Mate to get information from the chart about the bottom type: pipelines, cables, other obstructions and hazards, etc.).
o Ring the general alarm.
Radio
o Securite call that discusses your situation.
o Call nearby traffic that could be concerned.
o Call VTS.
o Call for tugs to escort. Call specific tugs if you know they are in the area.
Anchor
o Notify your lookout. Have them prepare the anchor.
o Try to slow your speed to give the anchor a shot of catching.
o If you are sure you will run aground, drop the anchor immediately.
o Have them hold it at one shot.
o Understand how the anchor will affect your bow and the rest of your ship. Use your bow thruster and rudder and engines accordingly. Discuss this out loud.
Continue
o Keep trying to make the situation better.
o Try to maneuver to a better location (using the current or wind) to protect the vessel.
o Call for tugs again.
o Continue to call traffic as needed.
o Try changing the scope on your anchor to pull you off.
