Collision Flashcards
Notice
o Zoom the ECDIS in and out while on a straight away. Do the same for the Radar. Scan for and contact all the vessels that you can well ahead of time.
o Be scanning the Radar for trails whenever you overly focus on the predictor and need to do a bridge scan.
Response
o You should have already noticed the vessel and tried to call it on the radio.
o You should have already sounded 5 short when you were in doubt of their intentions.
o Say out loud that you believe that there may be a collision.
o Stop engines.
o Attempt to steer away from the collision or direct the force for a glancing blow.
o Utilize your bow thruster (even if it won’t help).
o Call the engineers and ask them to close the watertight doors.
o Have Mate plot a position.
o Ring the general alarm.
Radio
o Securite call that discusses your situation.
o Call nearby traffic that could be concerned.
o Call VTS.
o Call for tugs to escort or assist. Call specific tugs if you know they are in the area.
o Call local police boat or USCG vessels to assist.
o Be prepared to call the COTP.
Anchor
o Notify your lookout. Have them prepare the anchor.
o Take note of safe anchorages nearby where you can safely investigate the damages.
Continue
o Keep trying to make the situation better.
o Try to maneuver to a better location (using the current or wind) to protect the vessel.
o Call for tugs again.
o Continue to call traffic as needed.
o The simulator assessors will stop the simulator a moment before you hit. They will call you over the intercom and tell you that it was a collision and then restart you.
o They probably won’t want to do emergency management.
o Keep calm the whole time. Carry on with the exercise.
