Notice

A

o This will probably happen in restricted visibility.
o Looking out the window. Monitor the buoy as you pass them and check their position on the ECDIS.
o You could have your mate log when we pass a buoy.
o Having your radar overlay on will help. Check this on the ECDIS frequently.
o If the Lat/Long lines on the radar are replaced by dashes, there is a loss of GPS or Gyro.
o It could affect AIS (spoofing), but that depends on the simulator.

Response

A

o Switch GPS units.
o Immediately call the engineers and ask them about getting the GPS back.
o Have Mate plot a position.
o Immediate transition to radar navigation. Be sure you can maintain situational awareness.
o Set PI lines. Check the PI lines that have already been set.
o Have Mate set PI lines on the starboard radar as well.
o Consider adjusting the range and vectors and trails of the radars.
o Consistently check your radar for traffic, adjust the ranges, compare radars, monitor your position.
o Call lookout and inform them of the situation, ask for extra-sharp lookout.
o Turn on the radar overlay on the ECDIS and check the comparison to the chart periodically to see if the GPS has recovered.

Radio

A

o Securite call that discusses your situation.
o Call nearby traffic that could be concerned.
o Call VTS.
o Call for tugs to escort. Call specific tugs if you know they are in the area.

o Notify your lookout. Have them prepare the anchor.
o Take note of appropriate anchorages in the area and discuss your reasoning.
