Notice

A

o This will probably happen in restricted visibility.
o Looking out the window. Monitor the buoy as you pass them and check their position on the ECDIS.
o Having your radar overlay on will help you notice a failure. Compare the overlay frequently.
o You could have your mate log when we pass a buoy.
o Compare the ECDIS to the radar and the window frequently.

Response

A

o Immediately call the engineers and ask them about getting the ECDIS back.
o Call lookout and inform them of the situation, ask for extra-sharp lookout.
o Have Mate plot a position (use the radar).
o Immediate transition to radar navigation. Be sure you can maintain situational awareness.
o Set PI lines. Check the PI lines that have already been set.
o Have Mate set PI lines on the starboard radar as well.
o You can use an EBL or PI lines to get the next course from two buoys in a line.
o Acquire buoys and use their relative vectors to identify your set.
o Consider adjusting the range and scanning of the radars.
o Consistently check your radar for traffic, adjust the ranges, compare radars, monitor your position.
o Slow down until you are comfortable with your surroundings. Then you may speed back up again.

A

o Securite call that discusses your situation.
o Call nearby traffic that could be concerned.
o Call VTS.
o Call for tugs to escort. Call specific tugs if you know they are in the area.

o Notify your lookout. Have them prepare the anchor.
o Look for a good spots to anchor and discuss your reasoning.

o Keep trying to make the situation better.
o Call for tugs again.
o Continue to call traffic as needed.
o Turn the radar overlay on to monitor for the recovery of the ECDIS.
o Ask the lookout to verify navigation aids as you pass them (if in restricted visibility).
o Look for a good spots to anchor and discuss your reasoning.
