Rudder Failure Flashcards

1
Q

Notice It

A

o The helmsman should notice it, but pay attention to the rudder angle indicator when you ask for course changes.
o They could lock the rudder in place, they could have it not respond.
o Make sure there actually is a failure. Adjust the rudder and see if the indicator responds.

Q

Response

A

o Verbalize where the rudder is and what its effect will be on the vessel.
o First response: Go to NFU (switch steering modes). Assign this to the Helmsman or Mate.
o If new steering modes don’t work: Switch pumps. Assign this to the Helmsman or the Mate.
o Start slackening speed immediately. Go all stop.
o Call engineering immediately after you switch pumps (assign this to the mate). Ask them to center the rudder.
o Have Mate plot a position.

Q

Maneuver

A

o Start slackening speed immediately. Go all stop. Go astern as necessary.
o It is possible that going ahead could be useful. Consider the scenario.
o You can use the torque of the astern bell to your advantage if necessary, but it might not be beneficial, so consider that before you make the command to go astern.
o Utilize your bow thruster as necessary. Even if you are going too fast for it to be useful, acknowledge that verbally, but still try to use it.
o Discuss the wind and current and how you expect them to affect your vessel.

Q

Anchor

A

o Notify your lookout. Have them prepare the anchor.
o Prepare to dredge the anchor (prepare for this and talk about it, but it probably won’t happen). Consider using the port anchor if you want to go to port or using the starboard anchor to go to starboard.

Q

Continue

A

o Put up NUC lights and shapes (2 reds and/or two balls).
o Keep trying to make the situation better.
o Call for tugs again.
o Continue to call traffic as needed.
o Use your engines and bow thruster to set yourself up.
o Look for a good spot to anchor and talk about it.
o If you are going to have a casualty, try to mitigate it to the best of your ability (i.e. if you are going aground, try to land at a soft spot, if you will collide, back your engines, etc.).
