Ruminant Flashcards
Ruminants
- the tongue
- the salivary glands
- the gastrointestinal tract consisting of:
- the mouth
- the oesophagus
- rumen
- reticulum
- omasum
- abomasum
- small intestine
- large intestine
- pancrease
- liver
- gallbladder
Tongue
- directs food into mouth and roll around
- the food is mixed with saliva and swalloed quickly
- saliva contains no enzymes
Oesophagus
- food is passed through and taken to the rumen
Rumen
this is where plant material sits untils is broken down. Fats are absorbed through the walls of the rumen
Reticulum
- has a honeycomb filter that stops larger particles from entering the next part of the stomach. The large particles are sent back to the rumen for further digestion
Omasum
this is where water from the food is absorbed and can also filter out any particles of food thats left
Abomasum
Is where hydrochloric acids and enzymes enter to allow fats, proteins and carbs can be extracted.
Small intestine
where nutrient absorption takes place
Pancrease
where pancreatic juice is secreated along with bile from the gallbladder this reduces acidity
large intestine
absorption of water and any remaining nutrients
Caecum
a pouch sits between the small intestine and large intestine. the bacteria within continues to ferment the foodstuff
Liver
it produces bile as well as controlling hormones that control enzyme secretion, and a storage of various minerals and vitamins
Dentition
herbivores have no upper incisors
common ruminan aniamls
- sheep
- cows
- goats
