Bystander
Someone who knows there is something bad/unjust happening but does nothing to help.
Bystander effect
Evidence shows if there are more people around doing nothing to help the person in need, you are less likely to help.
What makes the bystander effect worse?
- being in a rush
- the person who needs help is different to you
What was the holocaust?
A systematic persecution and genocide of Jews (and amongst other groups) during the second world war lead by the Nazi’s. They stripped the Jews of rights e.g owning a business, going to school
Who was Bonhoeffer and what did he do?
A German Christian priest who refused to be a bystander during the Second World War.
He spoke out on the radio, in his school against following the unjust laws - joined plot to assassinate Hitler - failed and was executed.
Who was James Mawdsley?
A catholic, went to Burma and protested against the lack of democracy of the Burma’s government and their treatment of it’s ethnic minorities.
What did James Mawdsley do?
He protested peacefully (handed out leaflets etc), he was arrested and help in bad conditions, tutored. He was released but returned again and arrested with a 17 year prison sentence - tutored again, solitary confinement.
What is Gemulit Hasadim?
Judaism - acts of loving kindness. A reason for Jews not to bystand. They believe we should work with God to bring about a better and more just world.
Naboth’s Vineyard
A reason for Jews and Christians not to bystand - God called prophet Elijah to tell King Ahab he was wrong letting his wife’s plot result in an innocents man’s death to get his vineyard.
(Prophet) Jonah
Reason for Jews and Christians not to bystand. Jonah did not want to speak to the wrong doers in Ninevah - ran in opposite direction. God punished him.
Shows you should not let consequences stop you from speaking out against bad behaviour.

Treat others as you would like to be treated - given by Jesus, reason for Christians not to bystand

Given by Jesus to summarise all of God’s commandments
Parable of the Good Samaritan
A story by Jesus to explain what is meant by ‘love your neighbour as yourself’ - your neighbour is anyone you need.
