Rotation And Revolution Flashcards
Revolution
A revolution is one complete trip around the sun. Earth makes this trip in 365 1/4 days.
Rotation
One rotation is a complete spin on the axis. Earth makes one rotation every day.
Axis
Earth’s axis is tilted around 23 degrees. It is a straight line about which an object rotates. Earth’s axis is an imaginary line that runs between the North and South Poles.
Day
Day happens when half of Earth is facing the sun, so either the North side or the South side has 12 hours of daylight.
Night
Night is when 1/2 of the Earth is facing away from the sun. The North or South has night while the other side has day.
Year
One year is actually 365 1/4 days. The forth days add up every year to every 4 years, make an extra day, and that year is a leap year
Earth’s rotation time
Earth makes one rotation every day, or 24 hours.
Earth’s revolution time
Earth makes a revolution in one year, or 365 and 1/4 days.
Tilt of Earth’s axis
Earth’s axis is tilted 23 degrees.
Summer
Summer is when one part of the Earth is angled toward the sun, so the heat energy of sunlight is more concentrated. Their is more heat on the ground, and temperatures get warmer. The other side has winter
Winter
Winter is when one side of the Earth is tilted away from the sun. The ground and temperature is colder.
