Ross River Virus Flashcards
What is the genus of Ross River virus
Alphavirus (species=Ross River virus)
What type of pathogen is it (RRV)
Virus
Structural features of virus
Non-cellular/“living”
Protein coat/capsid
Nucleic acid or DNA or RNA
Can only replicate using a host cell
How is it transmitted (RRV)
Vector, specifically mosquitoes (over 30 species) indirect
Ross river Virus life cycle
Virus found in a mosquito, mosquito bites host, virus transferred to host, virus replicates in host, another mosquito bites infected host and uptakes virus
Viral life cycle
1 Attachment- virus recognises and binds to a host cell via a receptor molecule on cell surface
2 Entry- virus or genetic material enters cell
3 Genome replication and gene expression- viral genome copied and genes expressed making viral proteins
4 assembly- new viral particles are assembled from viral genome and proteins
5 release- completed viral particles exit cell and can infect others
Can it infect other animals? (RRV)
Yes, there are animals called reserves which can be infected
