Malaria Flashcards
What is the genus of malaria
Plasmodium (multiple species)
What type of pathogen is malaria
Protist
Structural features of protist
Flagella/cilia/pseudopodia, membrane bound nuclei (possibly multiple) and organelles, cell membrane, possibly cell wall made of cellulose,
What is the vector of malaria (be specific about genus)
Mosquitos, female Anopheles (multiple species)
Define parasite
An organism which invades a host to use as a habitat, including for nutrients
Malaria cell types
Gametocytes, Sporozoites and merozoites
What are gametocytes in malaria
Male and female cells which combine to form sporozoites which move to the salivary gland in Anopheles mosquitos
What are Sporozoites in malaria
Cells which are transmitted into the host, where it travels to the liver to either complete asexual reproduction and turn into merozoites or become dormant in the liver cells
What are merozoites in malaria
Cells which travel in the blood, invading red blood cells for reproduction leading to the red blood cell bursting with merozoites. And also turning into male and female gametocytes to be taken in by other mosquitoes
When does an individual become sick (malaria)
When it is at a blood stage parasite/Plasmodium (when the cells are travelling in the blood)
How would global warming effect it (malaria)
Increase habitat that mosquitoes can live, increasing their population and increase in spread of malaria carrying mosquitoes.
Increase chance of breakout it Australia
