Influenza Flashcards
What pathogen is influenza
Virus
What is the genus? (Influenza)
Influenza (write Influenza virus)
What are the types of influenza
Type A - infects various mammals (including humans) spread via aquatic birds
Type B - infects humans, spread via humans
Type C - primarily infects humans, causes mild infection primarily in children
Type D - found in cattle and pigs, can infect humans but not known to cause illness
How is it transmitted
Indirect - left on a surface which a host touch’s and takes in
Direct - respiratory drop from stuff like sneezing and coughing
Structural features of a virus
Non-cellular/“living”
Protein coat/capsid
Nucleic acid or DNA or RNA
Can only replicate using a host cell
Viral life cycle
1 Attachment- virus recognises and binds to a host cell via a receptor molecule on cell surface
2 Entry- virus or genetic material enters cell
3 Genome replication and gene expression- viral genome copied and genes expressed making viral proteins
4 assembly- new viral particles are assembled from viral genome and proteins
5 release- completed viral particles exit cell and can infect others
