What are the 5 sorrowful mysteries
1 Jesus in the garden
2 Jesus is beaten ( scourging )
3 a crown of thorns
4 carrying the cross ( the way of the cross)
5 Jesus dies (crucifixion
Agony in the garden ?
- Jesus was left alone with no support from the disciples (fell asleep)
- he was scared and asked his father to let his fate “pass me by”
- was betrayed by his own disciples
- shows catholics even Jesus felt agony therefore it’s ok to feel upset and struggle in our lives. However takes comfort that god’ll be there to support us
The scourging at the pillar ?
- Jesus was ridiculed , mocked and humiliated
- soldiers stripped him of his clothes leaving him vulnerable
- scourged him with whips that had nails at the end of them
- Jesus didn’t put up a fight because he knew he had to suffer for a greater purpose
- sometimes Catholics have to endure pain and sacrifice but there’s a greater purpose to this
The crown of thorns
- used to mock jesus as the king of Jews
- thorns pushed into his head
- “they dressed him in purple twisted thorns into a crown and put it on him. And began saluting him ‘hail the king of the jews! ‘ = mark 15 : 17-18
- sometimes Catholics may be innocent and suffering unnecessarily. They may be mocked or ignored as they suffer. This suffering helps them understand what Jesus went through and be more like him
The way of the cross ?
- made to carry wood he would be killed on
- a knotty beam that dug into his skin
- fell 3 times from the pain & exhaustion
- watched by his mother , Mary , Veronica wipes his face
- important to Catholics because even though they’ll have to endure hard times , they’ll always be those around to help and support you in dark times
“As they were going out they met a man from Cyrene named Simon , and the forced him to carry the cross”
The crucifixion?
- stripped him of his clothes
- nails driven into his wrists
- mocked by soldiers
- in pain and anguish Jesus cries out ‘my god why have you forsaken me?’
- Jesus gave the ultimate sacrifice for others - his own life. When Catholics endure bad thing they’ll find comfort that god has a plan and purpose for suffering
- helps Catholics be more like christ
“Forgive them father , they don’t know what they’re doing”
