Interpretation of genesis ?
Literal =belief that the genesis account is a factual description of creation (often held by fundamentalist)
Metaphorical= view that genesis uses symbolic language to convey theological truth compatible with scientific theories
What did St John Paul ll say about religion and science (conflict)
“There’s no conflict”
Genesis 1-2 (bible said that in the beginning everything was…)
“Formless and empty”
What does the quote “formless and empty“ show
- there was nothing at the beginning of the universe
- everything from the universe must’ve come from somewhere
- the only being capable of creating everything is god
Catholics believe that god is the only being :
- omnipotent
- transcendent
- eternal
- god created the universe through the Big Bang
What did pope Francis say about god being a magician and what does it show
“Imagining god was a magician with a magical wand… but that isn’t so”
Gods planned and started creation allowing life in the universe to develop (chain event) and god is the first cause
Who was the first person to argue about the Big Bang
A catholic priest named George Lemaitre
What did George Lemaitre say about the Big Bang (cosmic egg)
That the scientific evidence suggested that the universe is expanding and probably started off very small
From this “egg” the entire universe was created
Theistic evolution?
The idea that god used the process of evolution and the Big Bang to create the universe
Who was St Augustine and what did he believe
A famous catholic bishop
He believed the bible is actually the word of god and has no mistakes
What does the quote “god said let there be light” and show
God speaks and creates everything
Bible makes it clear that god doesn’t use anything except his words to create everything
