Rope Terminations Flashcards
What is the purpose of a Preformed Line Termination?
A “wrap round” method of making an eye in the end of Terylene or Steel Wire Rope.
Also known as “Dead-Ends” within the CIT Trade.
What coating applied to Preformed Line Terminations for uses with synthetic ropes?
A Neoprene coating is applied to protect the rope.
What sizes and associated colour codes are used for synthetic ropes?
Sizing of Preformed Line Terminations;
Synthetic Ropes;
6mm dia - Green
8mm dia - Black
9mm dia - Orange
10mm dia - Green
What sizes and colour codes are used for steel wire ropes?
Sizing of Preformed Line Terminations;
Steel Wire Ropes;
6mm dia - Blue
9.5mm dia - Black
11mm dia - Orange
Explain the process of installing a Preformed Line Termination?
Fitting Preformed Line Terminations
- With the rope under tension, wrap one leg of the Dead-End two or three pitches around the rope.
- Align the cross-over marks and install the second leg two or three pitches.
- Complete the application of the Dead-End, one section at a time, always applying the short leg first.
- To ease the application on the last two pitches, the legs may be split.
How many times can a Preformed line Termination be removed and reapplied after initial application?
Can be removed and reapplied two times after initial application.
How many months after initial application should a Preformed Line Termination be replaced if removed?
After 3 months since the initial application, the dead-end must be changed if removed.
What is the purpose of Bulldog Grips?
Bulldog grips are used to make a temporary eye in steel wire rope.
What spacing is required between Bulldog Grips?
Grips should be spaced at a distance of six times the diameter of the Rope as follows
How many Bulldog Grips are required for Steel Wire Ropes 20mm or greater?
Spacing Requirements for Bulldog Grips;
- 20mm to 32mm = 4 grips
How many Bulldog Grips are required for Steel Wire Ropes up to 19mm in diameter?
Spacing Requirements for Bulldog Grips;
- SWR up to 19mm = 3 grips
Incorrect installation of Bulldog Grips can reduce the Working Load Limit by what percentage?
Incorrect installation can reduce the working load limit by 40%.
What application should Bulldog Grips not be used for?
Bulldog Grips must never be used to join two ropes together.
What is the purpose of a Hydraulic Press?
A Hydraulic Press is a self-contained hydraulically-operated unit for simple, fast and inexpensive manufacture of mechanical splices.
What is the purpose of a Wire Rope Gauge?
The wire rope gauge is of the ‘Go’ and ‘No Go’ type and is provided for gauging wire rope to determine the size of ferrule and swage dies to be used.
