A roof having single slope on each side of a central ridge. Usually with a gable at one or both ends.
Gable Roof
Another term for Gable Roof.
Pitch Roof
Also, Hip and Valley Roof. A roof which slopes upward from all four sides of a building, requiring a hip rafter at each corner.
Hip Roof
A hipped roof that usually has four to six sloping surfaces, terminating in a peak.
Pyramidal Roof
A roof hipped equally on all sides, so as to have a pyramidal form; a pyramidal hipped roof.
Pavillion Roof
A roof which has two pitches on each side; In Great Britain it is called a Mansard Roof.
Gambrel Roof
Another term for Gambrel Roof.
Curb Roof
Four sided Gambrel style hipped roof, has two slopes on each side with lower slope.
Mansard Roof
A development of the Shed roof made into a series of lean-to roofs covering one building; This is commonly used in factories where extra light is required through the clerestory formed in the vertical portion of the roof.
Saw Tooth Roof
A two-shed roof where the slopes meet at the center of the building.
Butterfly Roof
A gable roof with partial hips at the end of the ridges.
Hipped Gable
Another term for Hipped Gable Roof.
Jerkinhead Roof
A semi-cylindrical roof covering a space similar to a barrel vault.
Barrel Roof
A two-sided pitch roof curving gradually down from the ridge in the form of a Gothic Arch.
Rainbow Roof

A hemispherical form of roof usually found in observatories.
Dome
Is a steep roof of circular section that tapers uniformly from the circular base to a central point.

Spire
A very strong membrane or fabric stretched to form as a roofing.
Tensile Membrane Roof
A structure composed of a combination of members, usually in some triangular arrangement so as to constitute a rigid framework; A structural frame based on the geometric rigidity of the triangle.
Truss
A principal member of a truss which extends from end to the other, primarily to resist bending.
Chord
Any member which joins the top and bottom chords.
Web
A vertical member extending from the apex of the inclined rafters to the tie beam between the rafters and the lower ends.
King Post
A king post having shoulders and notches at its lower end to support the feet of struts.
Joggle Post
A horizontal member which ties together and stiffens two opposite common rafters, usually at a point about halfway up the rafters.
Collar Beam
Galvanized iron roofing used as a roof cover.
