WHY do we ventilate?
A
- To create a viable atmosphere for possible victims
- To control the direction and removal of smoke,
- To increase visibility for safer advancement for hose teams

HOW do we horizontally ventilate?
A
- Simply open doors/windows closest to the source for smoke removal
- Positive pressure ventilation
- Negative pressure ventilation

WHERE (as in location of structure) do we vertically ventilate?
A
- Scuttle hatch covers or skylights
- Anticipate fire spread potential
- On peaked roofs, closest to top ridge

WHEN do we vertically ventilate?
A
- Early before fire has weakened supportive roof structure
- To stop fire spread in roofs or attics
- Only when sufficient resources are committed

WHAT type of structure do we vertically ventilate?
A
- Warehouses
- Apartment buildings
- Strip malls or other retail occupancies
- Residences BUT proceed with caution! Horizontal ventilation is usually sufficient EXCEPT when large homes have ceilings so high hooks cannot reach.

- Obvious hazards, i.e. HVAC’s, patch-jobs, visible smoke/fire, bubbling of tar, sway, etc
- Egress options
