Romeo and Juliet conflict Flashcards
what does Shakespeare use conflict for?
builds tension which is then released through the violence that ensues.
what 2 types of conflict does Shakespeare use?
external-fighting and dispute between capulets and montagues.
internal-mental struggle
when is the first time we see conflict in the capulet household?
act 2 scene 5 when tybalt sees Romeo and he states the ‘villain is a guest’. tybalt is hot headed and a loyal capulet who thinks he must protect his family from the montagues. lord capulet uses patronising language towards tybalt calling him a ‘saucy boy’ meaning he is silly and causes trouble. tybalt withdraws as he realises lord capulet has the true power in the family
when do lord capulet and Juliet have conflict?
when Juliet disobeys the patriarch by refusing to marry and forge new alliances which was very disrespectful. capulet becomes violent and aggressive due to her disobedience. he says his ‘fingers itch’ showing violence is apart of life and his body is telling him to slap her but he must use self control to stop him.she is disowned by him which was the expected reaction and the reader sees that Juliet means nothing if she doesn’t obey. this shows conflict in the capulet household arises when someone threatens lord capulets authority.
how does the prologue set conflict in motion?
‘ancient grudge makes civil hands unclean’ making it obvious to the reader that the tragic fate of the couple wouldn’t be there if not for the mutiny between their parents.
how does the conflict in act 1 scene 1 begin and what does it show?
in media res to immerse the audience in fast moving pace early on. it starts between the servants from a small insult ‘do you bite your thumb at me sir?’ and the following arguing builds dramatic tension. it is however laced with humour as they try to catch the other in technicalities of language. they try to start a fight but still keep the pretence of civility ‘sir’. but the quick transition from humour to violence in the scene demonstrates the rapid pace that will dictate the play.
what does the princes speech foreshadow?
he shows that the conflict has become a regular occurrence saying the family have ‘thrice disturbed the quiet of our streets.’ he presents the extent of the conflict when he declares that if they fight again ‘their lives shall pay the forfeit of the peace’ and as the audience knows family members will die it means more conflict will come.
when is the climax of violence?
violence is a manifestation of conflict which comes to a climax at the duel between Romeo, tybalt, mercutio. the friar foreshadows this in the scene before(wedding) when he says “violent delights have violent ends’’. the wedding and this scene juxtapose each other perfectly encapsulating the story as their is love and desire but also violence and bloodshed.
what does Shakespeares opening of act 3 show?
benvolio opens saying ‘‘mad blood stirring’’ creating tension and pace. personifying blood as mad implies the families will clash and familial blood will takeover.
how does the structure provide the audience with catharsis?
follows the freytags pyramid structure with the climax in the middle (mercutios death) providing catharsis from the building tension from the first half.
what do mercutios last words show?
foreshadows later events and also acts as a catalyst for later events. Romeo becomes filled with a murderous rage killing tybalt and is banished setting the tragic ending in motion.
how does Juliet suffer from internal conflict?
she struggles between her love for Romeo and loyalty for her family. due to the conflict of the families. she tries to rationalise her feelings during the balcony scene showing her desperation for Romeo not to be a Montague. this desperation is what leads to Juliet going to FL after R’s banishment leading to the tragic downfall.
