Q

how was LOTF similar to coral island

A

in both novels there are 3 British school Boys shipwrecked on an island.hower in coral island they keep their British civilised standards in the face of all the uncivilised adversaries. LOTF is almost like a parody as the boys are in the same situation but behave very differently.

Q

when is coral island referenced in LOTF

A

in the first assembly ralph persuades the boys they will have a good time- ‘its like in a book-coral island’ and at the end it is referenced once again my a naval officer before realising what has happened. This is deliberate as golding shatters Ballantyne’s illusion by the boys demonstrating the evil within.

Q

how does dialogue show the boys descent into savagery

A

the boys are well spoken using middle class standard English showing how they are public school idealistic British boys. AS the novel progresses their speech becomes more colloquial with some swearing showing regression. Their taboo words wouldn’t be used by high class words.

Q

how is piggys dialogue different to the others

A

he is obviously working class as his speech has a lot of grammatical errors. His non standard grammar separates him highlighting their class differences to readers. He is the most intelligent but it isn’t seen due to his language.
