Romeo and Juliet - Act 5 (quotes) Flashcards
Romeo has just found out that Juliet is dead and asks if it’s really true
“Is it ee’n so? Then I defy you stars!”
Romeo promises that he will lie in death with Juliet
“Well, Juliet, I will lie with thee tonight”
Romeo explains to Balthasar that his plan is wild and savage and nothing will get in his way
“The time and my intents are savage-wild”
Romeo kills Paris
“O, I am slain!”
Looking at the dead Paris, Romeo notes that his victim was merely unlucky to have gotten involved in his bad luck
“One writ with me in sour misfortune’s book”
Romeo looks at Juliet lying in the tomb. He notices that she still has colour in her cheeks and lips. Romeo is totally unaware that Juliet is on the verge of waking up and that she is not really dead. This piece of dramatic irony frustrates the audience and intensifies the drama as we are aware that she is about to come out of the death-like state
“And death’s pale flag is not advanced there”
Romeo gives one last kiss to Juliet before he takes the poison
” Eyes, look your last.
Arms, take your last embrace, and lips, O you
The doors of breath, seal with a righteous kiss”
Juliet, realising that Romeo has taken poison, kills herself with his dagger
“O happy dagger!
This is thy sheath! There rust, and let me die.”
This Prince is angry and shows Capulat and Montague the consequences of their ongoing hate i.e the deaths of their children
“Where be these enemies? - Capulet, Montague,
See what a scourge is laid upon you’re hate”
Montague states that he will erect a gold statue in Juliet’s honour
“I will raise her statue in pure gold”
The Prince’s final words
“Some shall be pardoned, and some punished,
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Juliet and her Romeo.”
