This scene shows racism in the community, even towards children, and segregation between the whites and blacks

It gives us an insight as to how Cal acts around her friends and family. She speaks differently. We see she is very protective of the children and is very proud of them
What does the scene where Jem destroys Mrs Dubose’s flowers show us about Jem’s character?
It shows a change in Jem’s character. It shows Jem challenging authority and a rebellious side to Jem.
Why did Atticus get Jem to read to Mr Dubose?
He wanted to show him what real courage is; Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict but want to die free. Atticus says Mrs. Dubose is the bravest person he knows as she faced a challenge she knew she was going to lose but followed through anyway
How did Scout save Tom Robinson from the lynch mob?
Scouts innocent conversation with Mr Cunningham gilts him to leave Tom’s punishment to the courts
Why does Mr Raymond pretend to be drunk?
Mr Raymond would rather be viewed as a drunk, than have people pestering him about his decisions. The only reason the people of Maycomb with think he would marry a black woman was because he was drunk
What theme does Tom Robinson’s verdict highlight?
It highlights the theme of racism. The jury (of white men) were willing to put Tom’s life on the line, even though it’s clear he’s innocent
What emotions does Tom Robinson’s verdict evoke in the reader?
The scene evokes anger and disappointment in the reader as we know Tom is innocent and we want him to win
What themes does the missionary circle highlight?
It highlights the theme of religious hypocrisy and irony
What is ironic about the missionary circle?
A missionary circle is where ladies from the church get together to aid in church activities, plan events etc, but instead they mostly sit around and gossip about others in the community (not a very holy activity)
Give an example of hypocrisy in the missionary circle scene
The ladies talk about a missionary helping the poor tribes in Africa. There are supportive of him helping this tribe (whose members are black) halfway across the world, but think it is disgusting to even think about helping the negroes in their own community
What does the scene where Bob Ewell attacks the children show us about Boo Radley’s character?
We realise Boo has been looking out for the children the whole time; leaving presents, putting a blanket around Scout at the fire and now saving their lives. We see that Boo iss really very kind and caring and not the monster he is portrayed to be
